Aromcom - A Platonic Meet-Cute
Click to DonatePeople on the aromantic and asexual spectrums deserve a rom-com too! Aromcom depicts a cozy platonic meet-cute set during an Icelandic winter storm. Help us create on-screen representation for one of the least-represented queer identities.
Aromcom is a DC/Maryland-based short film that filmed in early 2025, written and directed by Katrina Jackson and produced by Catherine Bobalek.
Aromcom won a 2024 New York Screenwriting Award for Best LGBTQIA Short Screenplay, and a Maryland State Arts Council Creativity Grant.
We are fiscally sponsored by From the Heart Productions, a nonprofit dedicated to helping independent filmmakers with unique films that make a contribution to society get their films funded. HELP US HIRE A COMPOSER!
From now through the end of April, 2025, every dollar donated up to $1,000 will be DOUBLED by our matching donor David Solomon! If we can raise enough to match that $1000, that means… we can HIRE A COMPOSER! That’s right, donate here and we can actually get an original music score for Aromcom!
We already have an experienced composer who’s excited to work with us, whose music credits include Hawaii Five-0, MacGyver, and a whole suite of award-winning short and feature-length independent films. So here’s the deal:
- We’re continuing the International Asexuality Day campaign incentives of sending you one still image from the film for every $10 you donate (up to 20 stills) and one blooper for every $50 (up to 8 bloopers)
- For every $100 y’all collectively donate, we’ll release one new behind-the-scenes image on social media
- Are you curious who the composer is? Once we reach $500, we’ll post our composer’s bio on social media!
Campaign status as of Apr 30, 2025: $770 out of $1,000 raised
While stranded in a small Icelandic town during a winter storm, a nosy woman develops a squish—a platonic crush—on the badass, aloof owner of a found GoPro who starts to open up once they discover they’re both on the asexual and aromantic spectrums.
Parker (they/them) has a plethora of videos showcasing their solo travel adventures and creative art projects, but their apparent boldness masks their struggle to navigate this loud world full of people and their confusing relationships. Parker is played by Ziaire Mann (he/him).
Merida (she/her), a mechanical engineer, is normally a confident and socially adept person, but her platonic crush (squish) on Parker has her making a fool of herself in front of her friends. Merida is played by Elena Anderson (she/her).
Brandon and Trey (both he/him) are a couple that are happy to have their co-worker Merida third-wheel their vacation, as long as she puts up with their public displays of affection and merciless teasing. Brandon is played by Garrett Matthews (he/they) and Trey is played by MarQuis Fair (he/him).
